Fine Art Portfolios by Rick Braveheart

An Affordable Way To Collect Art

There is a magic to the land and animals of the Dakotas. It is a magic that can touch almost anyone who takes the time to be open to it. It is a land filled with immense beauty, dramatic colors, captivating shapes, extremes in weather, and always, at some level, a great mystery. The simple elegance of its prairies, the awe of its Badlands, the rugged wind that seeps into your bones and a light almost beyond description are all part of it. But there is much more beyond words which can only be described through images.

To share the beauty of the land and animals who call the Dakotas home I have created a series of five photography portfolios. These are collections of 5 or 10 smaller size hand printed photographs of a related theme or subject. All portfolios include a 4-page booklet about the Dakotas and about the images. Unlike large, gallery size prints which are expensive and time-consuming to produce, these small size portfolios also offer an affordable way to collect fine art photographs.

Each portfolio is shipped in a custom handmade enclosure. Like a book, the enclosure can be set on a coffee table or bookshelf and opened so that each image can be held in your hand and viewed. Or, if you wish, the images can be individually matted and framed. Regardless, these portfolios give you the option to display the art any way you choose.

For the first time ever, I am pleased to introduce and offer these photography portfolios of the Dakotas. And, I hope you will find them a great way to enjoy the beauty of the land and animals in your own home.

Artist's Sampler Portfolio

In this portfolio I've selected one image from each of the five portfolios in the "Under a Dakota Sky" series. Included in this portfolio are two images of landscapes, and one each of animals, plants, horses and rock formations. Each photograph presents a strong example of the Badlands and all five images together help convey a sense of place one can experience there.

Honoring the Land

From the nearly 1,000 landscape images I captured while traveling in the Dakotas I've selected ten for this portfolio. I feel they provide ideal examples of the wide diversity found in the land and the dramatic, sometimes almost unworldly colors that can be experienced in the Dakotas. A portfolio also provides an ideal way to experience the variety of landscapes found in these images. Because they are unbound, they can be handheld and viewed one at a time, laid out on a table to experience as a series, or matted and framed in a group.

Honoring the Animals

During my time photographing in the Dakotas, I was joined by hundreds of amazing and beautiful creatures including hawks, coyotes, horses, bison, sheep and many, many others. Many I met along the path as I photographed, others were more comfortable watching me from a distance, and a handful of others would often lead me into distant areas of the park I'd normally have missed. These are some of the great creatures of the Dakotas who fly, run, walk and hop.

My Friends The Stone People

With just a casual glance, most rock formations in the Dakotas look simply like ... well ... like large, irregular rock formations. But if you take time to study them, the unique and amazing shapes of animals, people or mythical creatures can slowly emerge. While carved by wind and rain, it’s easy to imagine these huge, elaborate shapes were created at the hands of highly skilled artists. From the more than 50 rock formations I had the honor of photographing, I've selected these ten as excellent examples. To honor their long presence on the land, these images were captured using historic photographic equipment and printed in black and white.

Honoring the Plants

Unlike popular belief, the Dakotas are filled with immense, colorful beauty which can be seen everywhere in the flowers, trees, grasses and shrubs. And although the area receives little rainfall, over the centuries these plants have found a way to not simply survive, but to thrive. This portfolio contains ten fine art images showing the colorful brilliance of Nature in the Dakotas.

Honoring the Horses

Although they are large and powerful animals, horses are known to be among the most gentle, sensitive and intelligent of creatures. As a photographer, I'm drawn toward photographing them because of their brilliant colors, graceful nature and strong presence. Horses are found throughout the Dakotas on farms, ranches and reservations. Some are working animals, some are show horses and a few others still run wild. This portfolio contains ten images showing the beautiful, peaceful, thoughtful and sometimes humorous nature of horses in the Dakotas.
